I played Heritage today in preperation for a tournament on Sunday. I played it from it's intimdating GOLD tees, stretching it out to 6900 grueling yards.
Heritage is a difficult golf course. The greens are very large and have lots of bumps and swales to putt through and over. A great example is #5, a 253 yard one shotter, playing down hill. When you get to the green, you will find a green that looks like it was designed for a 75 yard wedge shot, not a 253 yard fairway metal. If the pin is in the center of the green on 5, there is a 25 square foot flat area around the pin. Anywhere else on the 10000+ square foot putting surface and you will face some slope.
Currently, course conditions are really good. The fairways are tight, the rough is about 1-2 inches and just thick enough to give pause and the greens are smooth and true. The greens are not fast. I would guess they are rolling between 8 and 9. The green speed really affects the difficulty of this course and it is a much better test when they can cut them down and roll them, but they are doing a phenomenal job maintaining the course in the summer heat.
We played 18 holes beginning at 12:50 PM on a Thursday. We finished in 2:40 (twosome). We never saw a marshall other than the starter or a beverage cart. There was cold water on several tees - maybe three or four - not certain.
We used booked a reward time and got a great value for this course, but having lived in Southern California, I am not shocked by $100 per round golf.
I highly recommend the golf course if you enjoy hard courses. If you are looking for a walk in the park, this might not be it!
